The Forum of the Council Chairmen in Osun State, under the umbrella of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), has commenced massive empowerment programme targeting over 45,000 residents across the nooks and crannies of the state.
The empowerment programme christened 'Poverty Alleviation Scheme' is designed for the disbursement of 50,000 naira cash grant to each beneficiary in every Council as 'investment capital' into small scale enterprise by the residents of the state.
The Osun ALGON, in a statement personally signed by its Chairman, Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun noted that the empowerment initiative is aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and supporting existing small businesses at the localities.
"This is another indellible imprint in the history of our dear state particularly local government administration as we are resolute and poised to restore the lost glory through continuous implementation of masses-focused social intervention programmes capable of alleviating poverty, banishing hunger, creating jobs and boosting local socioeconomic fortunes and productivity.
"As responsible and responsive governments at the grassroots, we have prioritized welfare and well-being of our people that is why we painstakingly designed this scheme to meet the needs of our people across the 30 local governments in the state including youths, women, artisans, petty traders, young entrepreneurs and business owners among others.
"Just a day ago, we distributed 300 motorcycles across the 30 local governments to enhance security and communal peace. This gesture came after the successful completion of massive roads grading across the 30 local governments in the state. This empowerment programme targeting over 45,000 households across the state is a clear demonstration of our collective effort to alleviate poverty, banish hunger, create employment opportunity and breathe live into the small scale businesses.
" Each of the local governments will empower over 1,500 people giving every beneficiary 50,000 naira each for investment. The beneficiaries include; women, youths, elders, artisans, traders, business owners among others. This scheme is open to all.
"We commend the residents in the state for their unflinching support all along. Your show of love and acceptance have been the source of motivation to do more. We assure you of our topmost priority to the welfare and general well-being of all as we continue to turnaround the socioeconomic fortunes at the grassroots", ALGON stated.
